I'm looking for information on nonprofit mailing.  Can this be used for mailing individual items or does it have to be used for mass mailings?  Does anyone have experience with using it in your congregation?

Thanks for any information you can provide.

We use bulk mail for sending out our newsletters. It is my understanding you have to have at least 200 pieces of mail to use bulk mail and get a discounted rate.

That's an interesting question. I've never heard of nonprofit mailing. We too use Bulk Mailing. This requires a minimum of 200 envelopes plus it has to be the exact same thing in each envelope. Nothing can be personalized other than the individual mailing addresses. I wonder if there is a difference between the two. I wonder if Nonprofit mailing allows for cheaper individual mailings or smaller quantities of mailings. Questions to ask the Post Office I guess. Unless there is someone out there who is familiar with it.

    Blessings,

There is something called door to door direct mail. We sent out a bigger postcard advertising an event. We picked what mail routes we wanted. I know there was a spot that said profit or non profit.

This is true that the minimum is 200 pieces.  We are sending our newsletter to about 170 households, so to meet the minimum requirement of 200 I send 30 copies to the church.  There is a box to check when inside the USPS Business Customer Gateway portal for the non profit rate.  If you do not check it, you will pay the regular rate.

    Earl,

More information is available at this USPS weblink: https://faq.usps.com/s/article/What-is-Nonprofit-Mail

    Note especially the following:

Nonprofit Mail is printed material eligible to be mailed as USPS Marketing Mail® by organizations authorized by the Postal Service™ to mail at significantly reduced nonprofit postage rates. Nonprofit mail cannot contain matter that is required to be mailed as First-Class Mail®. For example, handwritten or typewritten matter, or bills and statements of account, are required to be mailed as First-Class Mail.

It would appear that Nonprofit Mail is primarily intended for large non-profits to discount postage when sending marketing mail to donors at a discount, so it is not going to be helpful for the small church. It cannot be used for mailing individual pieces, such as financial statements or correspondence, to church members, as noted in the underlined section above.

If you have a newsletter mailing list of 200 or more households, then it may be advantageous to get a bulk mailing permit for newsletters and other all church mailings, as many of our churches do.
